On this squeaky-white-sand beach, tribemembers will work together with the local fishermen village, population 352, to build the first eco-community resort in Sierra Leone from scratch. Read More...
On any dewy morning in Sierra Leone, one can quite easily find a bustling street with traders and smiling children, flashes of colour from the rainbow-coloured dresses darting in and out of view, verdant hills stretching far into the distance beyond.

The colour and smiles however, conceal a sadder truth. With some of the worst prisons in Africa, a stagnant court system, a police service averse to checks and balances, lack of accessible legal representation and endemic corruption, human rights and justice are high priorities for Sierra Leone.

Contributing in its own targeted and effective way is Timap, an independent Sierra Leonean paralegal organisation which aims to bring justice, advocacy and conflict-resolution services to poor and marginalised communities, and one of the partners we worked with as part of the Umubano Justice Project. So much for any chance that Gov. Joe Manchin’s choice to temporarily replace the late Sen. Robert C. Byrd would support broader efforts in the Congress to try to do something about the looming threat to humanity from global warming …

Charleston lawyer Carte Goodwin offered these remarks on the topic today at the news conference where Manchin announced his appointment: Read More...
CHARLESTON - Gov. Joe Manchin has selected his former general counsel Carte Goodwin to fill the late U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd's seat.

Manchin made the announcement Friday at a news conference. Rumors of Goodwin's appointment had swirled on the Internet late Thursday and into Friday morning.

Byrd isn’t up for re-election until 2012, but because the 2010 and 2012 elections will probably carry even more weight than usual as to the ultimate direction of the country, I was curious about West Virginia’s election law in the event Byrd is unable to continue serving out the remainder of his term.

In West Virginia, the governor, in this case Democrat Joe Manchin, would appoint someone to fill Byrd’s seat. At that point, what happens next boils down to a matter of dates that are rapidly approaching. Read More...
"Are you asking me about Vice President Biden?" McChrystal asks the [Rolling Stone] reporter at one point, laughing. "Who's that?"

"Biden?" an unnamed aide is quoted as saying. "Did you say 'Bite Me'?"

And this is what General McChrystal has to say about Richard Holbrooke, the President's senior envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan: "Oh, not another e-mail from Holbrooke. I don't even want to read it." McChystal described Holbrooke as "a wounded animal."

McChrystal on U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry: "Here's one [who] covers his flank."

McChrystal's aide on National Security Advisor James Jones: "a clown."

McChrystal is supposed to be working with these people. Instead, he's stabbing them in the back.

Fire him.

That's what I wished for last year on MSNBC, when McChrystal publicly demanded more troops in Afghanistan before the President had made that decision. This is what I said then:

"McChrystal is way out of line. He should remember what happened between Truman and MacArthur, another 'Big Mac.' He's pushing his luck here, because Obama needs to be the Commander in Chief. That's what the Constitution says - Article II, Section 2, that's what it Read More...
